Rhubarb is a species of herbaceous plant which flourishes without too much attention. Cultivated for its delicious, pink stems, rhubarb is a very hardy, frost-resistant vegetable – a period of frost in the winter helps produce the best stalks.
With the exception of Raspberry Red, all our bare root crowns are grown in Norfolk and offer the most reliable way to establish a strong, productive rhubarb plant. As partially developed plants, they benefit from a stronger start and well-formed root systems, making them more resilient throughout their first season.
2L potted plants are also available and offer a convenient, flexible alternative to bare root crowns. These plants have a well established root system, which helps them settle quickly into the ground and thrive. Unlike bare root crowns, potted plants can be planted over a longer period, making them ideal for those who want a head start without waiting for dormant crowns or specific planting windows.
Forcing rhubarb is a gardening technique used to produce stalks earlier in the season. This is done by excluding light from the plant, which encourages it to grow quickly in search of light, resulting in longer, paler, and more delicately flavored stems. One of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to force rhubarb at home is by using a black bin.
