- Consistently topped blind tastings
- Large, high quality berries
- Thornless and easily managed
Bred by The James Hutton Institute and released in 2024 as a worthy successor to their outstanding blackberry varieties Loch Ness and Loch Tay, Loch Katrine was selected to deliver a large, high quality, sweet and well flavoured berry for the discerning and growing dessert market.
Consistently large fruit of up to 9gms produced over a long eight week picking season with an average weight of 6.5gms. Loch Katrine has a very high brix to acid ratio of 17 which delivers its outstanding aromatic and sweet flavour with no background bitterness or acidity.
The variety has consistently topped all blind tastings at the Institute. The berries are firm, with excellent shelf life and good colour retention after storage. Yields in excess of 4kgs per metre row were achieved in trial, equal to Loch Ness. Loch Katrine is semi-erect, thornless and easily managed.
